PATHS (Providing Access to Health Solutions)

PATHS has now been running for over two years, and thank you to everyone who has supported PATHS. The service is for anyone who is currently on the Sickness Benefit or the Invalids Benefit and have an unmet physical and/or mental health need.  PATHS aims to remove, reduce or manage participants health issues so they can return to the workforce.

Some of the things that PATHS has paid for: Varicose Veins surgery, Carpal Tunnel Surgery, Specialist appointments, Dentures, Counseling/psychologist assessments, Life Coaches, Acupuncture, Gym programmes (surgical interventions must be greater than 6 months on the waiting list at the DHB).

If you have a patient who is on SB or IB benefits, and is eager to return to work, but is waiting for a health service to provide the necessary assistance, then perhaps PATHS could help.

If you have any questions please contact Jo Perrett – PATHS Health Coordinator on (03) 5487630 or 021 906992. Referrals can also be fax directly to us on (03) 548 7630 or  Karen Jenner – PATHS Community Mental Health Coordinator 03 546 9997 or 027 301 0474

Otago Medical Students’ ‘Early Community Contact Programme’

This year during the week 8th June, as many of you know through your involvement, 3rd year medical students are being placed within communities across the South Island to examine healthcare in a community setting. Three separate groups will be visiting the Golden Bay, Motueka and Nelson communities.

The students find this an excellent experience and in many cases find it a “revelation” with regard to health care and life in rural communities generally. As we continue to face challenges in drawing health professionals into community and general practice settings this component of their training is invaluable as demonstrated in the following quotes from students last year:

  • “After talking to so many amazing people, we changed our attitude towards rural places…. Some of us really started to think of getting into rural health care”
  • “maybe if we could work to cultivate the community focused healthcare system seen in Western Southland [nationally], we could influence the rest of the world, just as those small towns have influenced this big city girl”
  • “I learnt that a community approach and the good will of people are ultimately what makes health systems effective”
  • “…Nelson had a surprising impact on my attitudes towards healthcare… Where larger centers function on a impersonal model of tertiary care, these smaller community centers aim to cater to the individual and provide primary care far more often… where the individual has full control of their lives”
  • “…the rural environment actually facilitated social cohesion… it changed my perspective on rural health practice… I can see how interactive and rewarding it could be”
  • “Healthcare is much broader than the medical aspect that I have always seen it as and what we focus on at University. In fact it involves every aspect of one’s life… a totally holistic approach. This is a revelation to me. We must involve the community because it’s the community in which we live, that we get sick in and that we heal in.”

At the end of the visit students do a presentation back to their community and anyone is welcome to attend. This year’s presentations are:
  • Nelson Community & Whanau, Midday Thursday 11th June, Salvation Army Rooms.
  • Motueka at Community House 5:30pm Thursday 11th June, Deck’s Reserve.
  • Golden Bay at Community Workers 4pm on Thursday 11th June

For more information Motueka contact Glenn Thomas glenn.thomas@nelsonpho.org.nz regards Nelson and Motueka groups or Wendy Earle Heartlands@gbwct.org.nz regards the Golden Bay group.
