Primary Health News:
Shifting Some
Hospital Services to the Community -
Update A project that will see
some services provided in hospitals transferred to community-based practitioners
is underway across Nelson and
Marlborough.
The Government requires DHBs to identify
services, currently delivered in hospitals, that could be delivered
in the community. Nelson Marlborou gh DHB, Nelson Bays Primary Health and Kimi Hauora Wairau (Marlborough PHO) are
working together to assess services for inclusion in the
project. The goal of this project is to transfer services that
would give patients sooner and more convenient access to health care
and ultimately free up resources within hospitals. NMDHB Chief
Medical Advisor, Dr Andre Nel said, "Throughout this project there
would be a strong focus on ensuring that we maintained high quality
services." He said the Minister had made it clear that free services
should remain free to patients and that current General Practice fees
should not be affected.
So far discussions have identified GP
access to diagnostics, which was a pilot project, sleep apnoea
services and some rheumatology services. The project would also
align with the Minister of Health’s priorities in identifying ways
to establish Multi-disciplinary, Integrated Family Health Centres.
These centres would ideally provide these services from a central
site in the community. A plan of
services to be shifted and how this process will be conducted will
be produced by September 2009. This plan would provide the blue
print for implementation in 2010/11.
The PHOs will implement these services
into the community setting as they were responsible for the
coordination and organisation of primary health care services.
Multi-year PHO contracts would be developed to ensure continuity of
service, said Dr Nel.

Launch of Chin
DVD "Healthy
Living in New Zealand: Child Nutrition and Oral Health". 6pm Friday
7th August, at Victory Community Centre, Totara Street,
Nelson
After much time, effort and learning by all
parties the ‘Settling In’ Health Sector Group are proud to announce
the launch of this dual-language health information DVD to support
the growing Chin Community in transitioning to life in New Zealand.
The Chin are an ethnic minority from Burma (Myanmar)
many of whom have come to New Zealand and settled in Nelson as
refugees. The Chin language is quite distinct from Burmese and as
such there have been communication challenges as interpreters and
health resources are rare.
The Settling In Group, a collaborative group
of health and social services agencies working with refugees
and immigrants, identified this problem and set about resolving it.
In consultation with Chin Community leaders, this DVD is the
outcome - targeting in particular families with young children. Nelson
Bays Primary Health, particularly Community Nutrition Service and
Health Promotion staff, contributed to efforts alongside a number of
other agencies and the Chin Community to fund and develop the
final product. In particular thanks are due to Keith Hawke and
his production company for their time and effort in seeing this project
come to fruition.

Community transport for
accessing health services Looking at options around the region.
We are currently investigating
community transport options for accessing health services in the
Nelson/Tasman area. We seek your thoughts and knowledge on this
including how many people need transport, how often and how it is
achieved. We would like to know what you, or an
organisation you are affiliated with, currently do when people need
assistance with transport to get to medical/health appointments in
the Nelson and Tasman area.
From your feedback we will be able to
understand:
-
If this is an issue that needs
addressing;
-
If organisations currently provide
transport internally for their organisations; and
-
To what level this transport takes
place and if it is resourced in any way.
More information about the project
and the questionnaire is provided
here. A response to this would be gratefully received.
