Nelson Bays Primary Health (PHO) News - 22nd January 2009

Welcome to another edition of the Nelson Bays Primary Health fortnightly newsletter.

PHO News:

Nga mihinui ki a koutou mo te Tau Hou

A warm welcome for 2009 to you all from the team here at Nelson Bays Primary Health as we look to 2009 and the challenges we all face. With a new government we will no doubt face some further changes this year but as we all know the health sector would not be the health sector without change!

2009 is the Chinese Year of the Ox. The Ox works hard, patiently, and methodically, with original intelligence and reflective thought. The Chinese say the time of year and day an Ox is born is important in determining lifestyle. Behind the tenacious, labouring, and self- sacrificing exterior of Oxen lies an active mind. While their balance and strength inspire confidence, Oxen can seem rigid, obstinate, and slow. They impress others as leaders, fearing neither responsibility nor risk. However, sometimes they must labour long hours to accomplish little. As a result, the Ox can find life's journey laborious and the rewards uncertain.

We will leave you to draw your own conclusions regarding what this means for primary health care in Nelson Bays!

Happenings at NBPH

New Staff Member: Glenis Bell joins us in early February as the Chronic Conditions Coordinator. Glenis has a strong background in Cardiac rehabilitation, community development and project management. More on Glenis and her new role in the next newsletter.

While its early days in the new year, it's a good opportunity to reflect on what's coming up.

Several key projects contining to make steady progress are the: Golden Bay Integrated Health Services, Be Well Health Checks, Primary Mental Health Initiative, Community Nutrition Service and Pharmacy Services Development.

Key areas within the primary health sector and throughout our region remain, and include: reducing health inequalities, promoting community leadership and ownership, supporting the provision of quality primary health care services and understanding our population.

We look forward to working closely with many of you over the coming months and we will continue to keep you all well informed via this regular newsletter. As always, feel free to send relevant primary health-related items for the newsletter.

Bikewise Battle

It’s that time of year again! 1st – 28th February 2009 is Bikewise where companies and organisations compete to get as many of their staff riding to work as possible.

Nelson Bays Primary Health has a team in this national initiative run by NZ Transport Authority and Ministry of Health. All you have to do is set up an organisation profile then staff register individually to log their miles. Nelson Tasman has strong participation usually so you can always contact participating organisations and provide some ‘friendly encouragement’!

Valentine's Heart Week

Valentine’s Heart Week is the Heart Foundation’s big chance to reach out to all New Zealanders and explain why making the change to heart-healthy living is vital for our long-term wellbeing and happiness.

It’s also our chance to raise the crucial funds we need to continue our work advancing cardiac care, funding heart research and promoting healthy lifestyles.

This year, we invite workplaces to “Wear Red for Heart Day’ on Friday 13 February – a day to wear a splash of red and give a gold coin donation in support of our work.

To register your workplace please visit www.heartweek.org.nz and click on ‘Wear Red for Heart Day’.  Simply fill in the online registration form and Averil West will be in touch with everything you need to prepare for the big day!
