Nelson Bays Primary Health (PHO) News - 15th October 2008

Welcome to another edition of the Nelson Bays Primary Health fortnightly newsletter.

PHO News:

Introducing Caroline Allen - Pharmacy Facilitator

Caroline was recently appointed as a Pharmacy Facilitator for Nelson Bays Primary Health as well as the Marlborough area.

In her own words:

I moved from the UK to Nelson in September this year, with my husband and daughter.  My career background is 11 years as a Community Pharmacy Manager for Alliance Unichem, before moving to the NHS to work as a Locality Support Pharmacist for the East Riding of Yorkshire Primary Care Trust for the last 4 years.

This new Pharmacy Facilitator role is defined as an interface, between the PHO, the Clinical Governance Group and the Clinicians (which includes the whole multi disciplinary health care team such as GPs, Nurses and Pharmacists).

The main purpose of the Pharmacy Facilitator is to assist Nelson Bays Primary Health and Kimi Wairau Practices with improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of prescribing. Another part of the Pharmacy Facilitator role is to assist Nelson Marlborough District Health Board with the implementation of the New Zealand National Pharmacist Services Framework, which is summarized as five new services under the two main themes of Information Services and Medicine Review Services.

To enable these new Pharmacy services to be viable, it is important that they are developed so that they provide a service that supports and integrates with GP work, and it is important that we reflect the needs and beliefs of the populations that we look after.

I have already been involved with discussions about the Pharmacy Interventions charges, and Margaret Gibbs, the Nelson Bays Primary Health General Practice Coordinator, and myself have worked with MedTECH to develop an SQL query for practices to use to delete the GP’s Preferred Medicines Lists. I have also made a suggested formulary to use to start rebuilding the Preferred Medicines List generically.

I am keen to hear your ideas and experiences and I look forward to meeting and working with you in the future.

You can contact Caroline on 549 1651 or email Caroline.Allen@nelsonpho.org.nz
