Nelson Bays Primary Health News:

Shifting of some Secondary Services to Primary Care

As indicated in an earlier communication in May, the project to Shift some Secondary Services to Primary Care is now underway. The goal, of this Government requirement, is to transfer services that give patients sooner and more convenient access to health care and ultimately free up secondary service resources.
Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, Nelson Bays Primary Health and Kimi Hauora Wairau PHO are working together to assess services for inclusion in the project.
There will be a strong focus on ensuring that we maintain high quality services and quality assurance reporting. The Minister has made it clear that free services should remain free to patients and that current GP fees should not be affected.

We have initially identified the following for transfer to Primary Care:

  • GP access to diagnostics (which was a pilot project in the past 12 months)
  • Post-discharge follow-up of patients
  • Sleep apnoea services.

The project will also identify ways to establish Multi-disciplinary, Integrated Family Health Centres.
A plan of services to be shifted and how we intend to conduct this process will be produced by September 2009. This plan will provide the blue print for implementation in 2010/11.
The DHB will focus on shifting hospital based services that best meet the needs of our population, are consistent with Government goals, and can be delivered safely and more conveniently through primary care providers.
Nelson Bays Primary Health will implement these services into the primary care setting as they are responsible for the coordination and organisation of primary health care services.
Multi-year PHO contracts will be developed to ensure continuity of service.

Postnatal Depression Support Network

Postnatal Depression Support Network provides free confidential advice and support for women and their whanau experiencing postnatal depression.

Although we can provide a service that will compliment and work with other services including GPs, Kawai clinic and Plunkett, our services are only aimed at those with mild to moderate depression.  Many mothers with postnatal depression find it very difficult to access the support they need due to the nature of the illness, and our organisation bridges this gap by providing support in their own homes (arrangements can be made to receive support out with the home if that is a preferable option).  All our trained and experience support workers can provide three months of support at a time and frequency that is convenient for the client.  Our services cover a large area form Nelson to Motueka, and email/phone support for clients out with these areas.

Referrals can be made by requesting a referral pack from;
