Welcome to another edition of the Nelson Bays Primary Health fortnightly newsletter.

Nelson Bays Primary Health News:

beWell Lifestyle Support Services Health Directory
Printed Resource due in August

Nelson Bays Primary Health has established a Lifestyle Support Services database for the Nelson and Tasman region. Originally set up to support the Vascular Risk Assessments that all general practices are currently undertaking, we are also hopeful that it becomes a very useful resource for finding health-related services throughout the region.

This information is available on our website: http://www.bewell.org.nz/supportservices. This is being updated over the next couple of weeks so some health areas are still missing.

We are also finalising a printed resource taken directly from the Lifestyle Support Services database. Some of you will remember the 2006 Nelson Bays Health Resource Directory which proved to be very popular. It is our intention to keep this up-to-date and available as a printable pdf version directly from the website.

If you are already included please feel free to check your details on the website and note any changes you would like made.  If you are not included and would like to be, please fill in the form provided here
Please send all forms and changes to Tessa.Donald@nelsonpho.org.nz

We will be printing our first version of the directory at the beginning of August, so if you wish to be included in this edition please send your details before 31st July 2009.  Any requests received after this will be included on our website and will be available when an updated directory is produced.

Primary Health Care News:

Breaking News: Free Flu Vaccinations:
Press Release 9th July.

The seasonal flu vaccine, which was previously available free to people with underlying health conditions, is now available free to all New Zealanders, the Health Ministry said today. The vaccine, which does not provide protection from swine flu, is available free from GPs until the end of September.

The Health Ministry said making the seasonal flu vaccine free to all is expected to ease the numbers of people seeking treatment for seasonal ills this year as well as reducing the numbers of hospital admissions.

Nelson Tasman Safe Communities:
Helping to make "a safe New Zealand, becoming injury free"

Safety and reducing injury are worldwide issues. The World Health Organisation initiated the Safer Communities model to help and the Safe Communities Foundation of New Zealand (SCFNZ) is based on this, with the goal: “To work collaboratively with communities, schools, industry and government agencies to improve community safety through the creation of a sense of awareness, understanding, support and leadership to implement effective community safety programmes, to create safe environments and to contribute to reducing the social and economic costs of injuries in New Zealand.”

To read more about this important initiative download their first newsletter . You might also want to check out the following website: http://www.safecommunities.org.nz/resources/guidelines/

The Southern Regional Health School, Nelson:
Supporting students with high health needs.

The Southern Regional Health School is situated in the Rainbow Rooms at Child Development Services at Nelson Hospital. It is a registered school based out of Christchurch with sites in Blenheim, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill, as well as Nelson. Peter McCoy and Helen Trevena are the two Nelson based teachers.

They work with students with high health needs identified by a qualified medical practitioner specialising in the patient’s condition. Students need to have an active treatment programme for their medical condition or be part of a health funded mental health programme. Students generally have to be recuperating /hospitalised for a period over 10 school days, have had 6 hospital admissions in 12 months or have repeated school absences which will exceed 40 school days in 1 year. The teachers work with secondary and primary aged students at the hospital, at home or school. They meet with the student, caregivers and the school to develop individual learning plans with many students being enrolled with The Correspondence School. They run flexible, individualised programmes and assist with transitioning students back to their school of enrolment.

An Endorsement from Dr Nick Baker, Community Paediatrician.

"From my angle it is really making sure GPs know of the service for kids who are missing lots of school. This can occur while waiting for a 'paeds' outpatient department or with chronic fatigue, mental health problems or school phobia with psychosomatic symptoms. The school service is great and a valuable tool to gets kids reintegrated back into the school system and not fall behind during illness".
