The 2009 Influenza Immunisation Campaign

Influenza is a major killer. Currently more than 400 people die each year in New Zealand from influenza. A more deadly strain of influenza virus circulating this year, together with rising drug resistance and New Zealand’s low immunisation rates, has influenza experts worried.

Christchurch virologist Lance Jennings says New Zealand is due for a more serious influenza season, as the past few have been mild.

This year’s influenza vaccine contains protection against a Brisbane-like strain which killed six children in Australia last year which medical authorities in Europe are warning it could be the most deadly influenza virus they have seen for 20 years.

Key messages for this campaign are:

  • Immunisation is the best protection against the influenza virus as there is no natural immunity to seasonal influenza.
  • Influenza does not result from vaccination; a person may feel a little off  for a day or two but rarely does it develop into influenza
  • Immunisation is free from your general practitioner if you are over 65 years or if you are living with a chronic medical condition.
  • Check with your doctor or nurse to see whether you are eligible for free immunisation.
